Recently Pharmaceutical company Actavis announced that they will be discontinuing the production of their popular Promethazine with Codeine cough syrup. The company has come to the decision due to the high increase in the recreational use of the cough syrup. The Promethazine with Codeine cough syrup is usually added to some soda like sprite, 7up or mountain dew to make a concoction which is known as lean, sizzurp, texas-tea and many other names. Jolly Ranchers is sometimes added to add some flavor and excitement. Thanks to its almost perfect kinship with the hip hop culture this drink is constantly being promoted to the younger generation by means of subliminal and direct messages. Actavis felt that this kind of widespread promotion of the “unlawful and dangerous” use of their product was enough to discontinue the medication
While other rappers are using the opportunity to stock up on the syrup before the inevitable drought there are some that agree with the company’s decision because they have experienced the bad side of the drug which may have in some cases included the death of a loved one. Lil Boosie is one of those that approve the company’s decision to discontinue the cough syrup because he feels it has taken a toll on hip hop culture and the lives of many young people. While talking with TMZ he also added that the drink “Lean” is very addictive and “Once you on it, it’s hard to get off, damn near impossible”.
